I came accross this article from The Soil Association about Weedkiller in our Bread, yes really! The article states that :

'The International Agency for Research on Cancer (part of the World Health Organisation) have identified glyphosate as a probable carcinogen to humans'.

Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup Weedkiller and farmers are spraying wheat crops with Glyphosate a few weeks before harvesting to kill the crop and remove any weeds to make it easier for them to harvest. The chemical can enter the food chain as it does not break down easily and tests conducted by the DEFRA committee have found as much as 30% of UK bread contained this weedkiller, wheat is obviously also used in biscuits and cakes.

Denmark, Switzerland, Germany and France have all enforced restrictions on the use of Roundup and outside of the UK there are moves to ban the sale and use of Roundup.

The Soil Association have called for an immediate ban on pre-harvest use of Glyphosate on crops, but they want to do more to stop this chemical entering the food chain.

The information in this Blog has been sourced from the Soil Association. You can see the full article by the Soil Association on the link below and add your name to the Soil Association petition so they can do more to stop this chemical entering the food chain.
