  • Your skin needs healthy fats to look its best. Certain fats in your diet helps your skin hold on to essential moisture to smooth and plump the surface of the skin. Essential fatty acids feed and protects the skins membrane helping to keep skin youthful and supple. A study that was published in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that women who had a higher intake of these essential fatty acids had firmer skin and fewer wrinkles.

    What are Essential Fatty Acids?

Essential Fatty Acids were discovered in 1923 and were orginally classified as Vitamin F, however, after research in 1929 they were best classified as fats rather than a vitamin. The main Essential Fatty Acids required by humans are Omega 3 (alpha-linolenic acid) and Omega 6 (linoleic acid), the body requires these fatty acids for good health, however the body cannot synthesize them, therefore they must be ingested or can be used topically on the skin. The main food sources that contain Omega 3 and/or Omega 6 are pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, leafy vegetables such as spinach, fish/shellfish, chia seeds, rapeseed oil, flaxseed, soya oil, walnuts and hemp seed. Essential Fatty Acids play a part in many metabolic processes and evidence suggests that the wrong balance of these fatty acids can result in illnesses like Osteoporsis, it has also been shown that an Essential Fatty Acid deficiency results in dermatits.

Fats also allow the absorption of protective antioxidants like Vitamin E, Beta-carotene and Lycopene, once absorbed, these antioxidants help protect the skin against UV damage that can contribute to premature ageing and skin cancer, it has been shown that a diet that is rich in healthy fats can reduce the risk of the most deadly form of skin cancer.

Certain fats are more skin friendly than others, for example monounsaturated fats that are found in olive oil, almonds and avocados and Omega 3 fats found in fish, walnuts and flaxseed are all skin friendly, whilst trans fats used in deep fried foods along with hydrogenated vegetable oil can promote free redical damage and ageing.
